2018 Games Day Review

From David Abercrombie, Chairman,

Lesmahagow Highland Games Society...

The committee would like to thank everyone who turned out for the Chieftain's Procession, Crowning and Games Events on the Glebe yesterday.

For the fifth year in succession, the sun shined throughout the afternoon, and everything seemed to go to plan. We had four bands for the Chieftain's Procession, and the same again for the evening's Beating the Retreat. What many of you will have missed in the morning was Coalburn IOR's 'Scotland the Brave' tribute outside the Gardiners factory, to the late Tom Gardiner, a big supporter to the Games & Coalburn IOR. A nice touch from Pipe Major Steven McCall & co.

Our Tartan Queen Jennifer, Princesses Millie & Ellis, Clansmen Johnny & Liam executed their duties impeccably throughout the course of the day, and Chieftains Robert & Andrew Irving proved to be the big favourites with the village that we knew they would be!

An afternoon line-up of traditional heavyweight events, highland dancing, pipe band contest (featuring 6 pipe bands)and junior athletics had something for everyone - and it must have been thirsty work being a spectator, as our bar manager Mags and team served up close on a thousand cooled pints (a first this year) in the afternoon, before running out!

A big shout-out to the council team for maintaining the grass on the Glebe, setting up the park for us, and clearing up after the event. Within only a couple of hours the Glebe was once again restored to its beautiful condition - well done guys!

The festivities continued long into the evening with fine entertainment served up in the local hostelries, including the Chieftain's Ball in Hollandbush where our traditional ceilidh was held. It's fair to say that we all danced the night away!

When you realise that we have around only 15 committee members putting on a show this size, you see how much thanks we are due to each and every one of these volunteers, particularly Secretary Lynn Callan and treasurer David Rollo who contribute so much each year...

So that's it for another year - if you participated in any way, thank-you. Why not think about joining the committee for next year? Look out for the date of our AGM or talk to an existing committee member.

Well done everyone - see you all again next year!

David
